History

MC Industrial, an independent McCarthy company, is a national construction firm dedicated to the highly specialized needs of the industrial marketplace. Built on the foundation of 150 years of proven McCarthy building excellence, MC Industrial was formally created in 2005. In total, McCarthy and MC Industrial have delivered nearly $2 billion in industrial projects across America. Today, the firm is ranked by Engineering News-Record among the top builders in a variety of categories including refinery and petrochemical plant, industrial process, power and fossil fuel construction.

A Look Back

Over 150 years ago, an Irish immigrant named Timothy McCarthy began a lumber business in Ann Arbor, Mich. The company he founded in 1864 is now a multi-billion dollar construction firm and one of the largest and most diversified commercial construction companies in America.

Through the years, McCarthy established a reputation for delivering highly complicated construction projects on schedule, within budget and with the highest levels of safety and quality. The expansion from state-of-the-art healthcare and laboratory facilities into industrial construction was a natural. McCarthy delivered its first industrial project nearly 50 years ago.

By the 1990s, McCarthy had formalized the firm’s commitment to serving the industrial marketplace with the creation of a focused Industrial Group based in St. Louis. Supplementing a team of existing, long-time McCarthy staff with experienced heavy industrial personnel, the firm’s resume in the industrial marketplace continued to grow.

Work in the automotive and aerospace manufacturing industries led to work in steel and aluminum engine casting plants. With every project, capabilities in equipment-setting and process manufacturing were being refined. And, as a true self-performing contractor, experience delivering critical shutdown work so common in the automotive, manufacturing and in power industries continued to grow. By the end of the decade, projects in the metals, paper, power, aerospace, automotive, petro/chemical, food & beverage and general manufacturing sectors were all underway.

A Transition to 100% Employee Ownership

In April 2002, continuing on the company’s quest to become "The Best Builder in America,” 138 years of family ownership came to an end when Mike McCarthy sold his majority interest in the company to employees. Now 100% employee-owned through a well-funded ESOP, employees are both challenged and rewarded to act like owners while maintaining the family atmosphere that has made the company distinctive since 1864. The net result? An empowering environment that is entrepreneurial in nature, and is directed towards providing our clients with creative and value-oriented construction solutions.

The Creation of MC Industrial
